Introducing Kevin Thompson, Chief Executive, New Zealand Safety Council. Kevin has been a member of the New Zealand Safety Council since 2003, a NZSC Registered Safety Professional since 2005, and in 2019 approved as a HASANZ Registered Health and Safety Professional. He currently serves on the HASANZ Board of Governance and the HASANZ sub committee for competency profiles. He is a very experienced professional in the safety and training disciplines since 1997, and 12 years working as a Senior Safety Manager in an Australasian Construction company. Since 2014 he has worked in the public sector as a consultant,

John Beattie


John is the Chairman of the Board of the New Zealand Safety Council, and he is also chair of the NZSC Registration Board for Registered Safety Professionals. He is a senior HSEQ Director having held several executive HSE General Manager roles with large international corporates. His background includes a career as an Engineering Artificer and Systems Engineer. He has also worked in the construction, rail, mining, infrastructure, transportation, forestry, telecommunications, gas, and manufacturing industry sectors. He specialises in developing due diligence governance and in leading organisational safety and environment capability through positive performance indicators and outcome measures. He is passionate about improving health, safety and environmental professionalism throughout Australasia.

Karyn Beattie

Media Manager

Karyn is a Safety, Health and Environmental professional currently the Group Sustainability Manager at Active Refrigeration Limited and Thermal Solutions. She also represents the council regularly, speaking at conferences and forums, volunteering for charitable work and mentoring other safety professionals. Karyn currently serves as the Media Manager for the New Zealand Safety Council and handles enquiries.

I am a Registered Safety Practitioner (RPS) and an Accredited Safety Auditor (ASA), and a member of the New Zealand Safety Council Board serving my 4th term ( 8 years) I have lead the collaborative development of H&S policies, strategy and change management plans as well as developed a wide range of documented procedures for hands on use on site. My participation in workplace health, safety and environment design, development and implementation indicates my strong hands on approach health and safety leadership. I have 44 years of Safety experience in the Manufacturing, public service, transport and civil construction industries. I have extensive experience in conducting ISO9001, 14001, ASNZS4801 and OHSAS18001 third party audits as well as an experienced ICAM investigator. Having qualifications in electrical and mechanical engineering allows me to have a practical approach to resolving complex technical health and safety issues.
